It is an ordinary day, and you are just about to finish a drawing of the ocean. You are a little worried because your deadline is coming up. You still can’t believe that you are a professional artist. It has always been your dream, and you always have had a love for art. You smile as you put your pastels down.
In front of you what was once a white canvas is now an explosion of blues. The waves fool the eye, making it look like it is moving. The fish underneath the ocean’s surface are filled with colors that mix perfectly with the blue colors. You start to begin to clean up. As you clean up, memories of the phone call that changed your life flood back to you.
It had been two years since you started your career as an artist. You searched everywhere for jobs, but with the economy bad you had no luck. You were barely paying rent on you small one bedroom apartment, where you lived alone. You spent too much time trying to find work to even think about a boyfriend. You were feeling depressed, and was on your couch eating chocolate and crying. It was just another depressing day of no work.
You’re outdated cellphone rang, and you picked up.
You hear a man with a strong English accent, “Pardon me, is this ________ (Name)?”
“Yes, it is. Who is this.”
“My name is Arthur Kirkland. I have seen some of your pictures, and would like to hire you to do some artwork.”
You couldn’t believe it! Not only were you getting a job offer, but by someone who found you? You could hardly contain your excitement.
“Yes, I have room in my schedule. I would be happy to work for you. I’ll give you my email, so you can send me a detailed description of what you want. It’s ________________________ (You’re Email). For now just tell me a summary of what you are wanting.”
“Wonderful! I am looking for a drawing that depicts a forest at midnight with a full moon shining over the trees, giving them a halo effect. I will email you more details later.”
“Great! Now to discuss price…”
You were nervous now. You knew that new artists never get paid much, and they can get ripped off easy. Put at this point this drawing might be the only way you can keep your apartment, at lest for another month.
“I feel like an acceptable price would be $1,000.”
You felt your mouth drop. You couldn’t believe it. One thousand dollars for one picture?! Did this guy want your artwork that bad? What’s going on?
“Excuse me miss? Are you still there?”
“Ye-Yes. You said one thousand dollars?”
“Yes, I’m sure you will accept it at this price. After all the economy isn’t that good.”
You heard sarcasm in his voice. It was almost like he new how bad you were doing and made it so you couldn’t refuse this offer, which, of course, you couldn’t.
“Yes. I can agree to that.”
“Excellent. I will mail you the payment and you mail the drawing to the address I will email you on May 23. I think that’s a fair deadline.”
You thought you heard something in the phone. Was he licking his lips?
“I cannot wait to receive your artwork. I look forward to doing business with you.”
-End of Flashback-
Ever since that phone call, Mr. Kirkland had ordered many drawings from you all at a high price. It feels good that someone is willing to pay so much for your work. It makes you happy, and it makes you feel special. You had talked to Mr. Kirkland many times, and you began to wonder what he looked like. Someone who loved your artwork this must, must be someone special.
You finished cleaning up in your new apartment. It was much nicer than your old one. It was a one store three-bedroom apartment with a kitchen and two bathrooms. You also had a balcony that had a view of the ocean outside your house. The beach was only a few miles away. You had this wonderful apartment and view, but no one to share it with. At lest you talked with Arthur, even if it was just business. You went into the kitchen to get some tea, when your cellphone rang.
“_________ (Name) H-Have you finished the dddrawing?”
You knew Arthur's voice by now, but he sounded weird…like he was nervous.
“Ah...Yes, I just finished actua-“
“Good! Good, I have another job for you,” Arthur interrupted you.
“Another one? So soon?”
“Yes! But this one is different…I would like to hire you to come to a certain location and draw a landscape.”
This shocked you. He had never asked you to actually go anywhere.
“I-I don’t know…”
“I will pay for your travel and provide a place for you to stay. Also, I understand how this is an inconvenience for you, and your pay will increase. $2,000.”
Two thousand dollars!? That was double what you normally got. Arthur sounded…desperate like he needed the picture. You couldn’t help blushing. Did he like your artwork so much he was willing to go to such lengths?
“Where is it that you want me to go?”
“Bran’s Castle in Brasov, Romania. Bran’s Castle is where I live, and I would be honored to have an artist like you in my house.”
Romania? You definitely haven’t been there before. You never even have traveled out of your country _________(Country). You wonder what the people were like? The food? The culture. You can’t control your excitement. The idea of adventure overtook your concerns. You calm down and answer Arthur.
“Alright Arthur, I except the job.”
You hear Arthur sigh on the other end of the phone like knowing I was coming got rid of his stress.
“Excellent. I will arrange a flight for you, and pick you up at the Brasov Airport. I’ll email you the flight details. I look forward to seeing your artwork. Goodbye.”
Arthur hangs up and you put your phone down. You are full of mixed emotions. You feel excitement, worry, anxiety, and happiness. You are excited for the chance to go somewhere new and for adventure, but your also worried about all the things that could go wrong. Also you’ve never been anywhere this far… You think about finally meeting Arthur. This idea makes you blush. He was the first person to love your art (or so you thought). This was a chance to not only meet him, but to get to know him.
You look around your apartment admiring where you have gotten because of Arthur’s business. You walk out onto your balcony and see a beautiful sunset. The normal mixture of orange, yellow and red across the sky is different today. The sun setting creates a red glow on the horizon with no other colors. The deep red color mixes with the clouds and seem to move in the sky, creating a blood like effect. It was so different and unique that it takes your breath away.
The day was ending with a blood sunset as an omen about the new day that was about to begin.
